Resolved Question: Should I get rid of my southern accent?

I'm from Alabama but was born in Compton and lived there for seven years and have lived in Alabama for ten years. I have a southern accent naturally and I love my accent it makes me who I am, my dad is from California and every time I go and visit people always comment on my accent saying it's cute and unique. I was visiting a college and one of the students said that people with southern accents won't get that far in life because people perceive us as idiots so should I get rid of my accent or completely ignore that comment?...
